Why

This resource is the collaborative efforts of Heart of Worcestershire College, Warwickshire College Group and Kidderminster College known collectively as Colleges Worcestershire. It is designed to support teachers and careers advisors when looking at career options with learners or other individuals who may be interested in progressing into Health & Social Care.  

Health and Social Care is a growing employment sector and one that will continue to do so, there are many different services involved who work together in a range of diverse roles to support those in need within society and therefore health and social care offers a very real career choice, this resource is a great starting point in that journey. 

This resource looks to highlight the roles within health and social care and focus on the exciting ways that by being a part of this hugely rewarding sector allows the opportunity to be a positive influence on the lives of others and is a career of great value and importance. 

It will enable users to gain a realistic and valuable insight into the world of Health and Social Care. Hear from service users, care workers and employers in the sector to understand the many and varied possibilities of a Career in Care! 

Who

Secondary and high school pupils, FE college learners, adults wishing to retrain would all find this resource useful and informative. Whether as a tool to start planning a career in care or for researching more about Health & Social Care as a possible career option. 

How

A highly interactive resource designed for the user to be able to navigate to area’s they are most interested in, dip in and out of or watch as a whole resource. 

You can click on a section and work through the resource chronologically or visit specific sections by navigating back to the Home slide by using the Home icon in the top left of each slide. You can also navigate to the Menu button and choose a specific section from there. The Menu button can be found on the top right hand of each slide. 

This resource could form part of a career’s guidance appointment, used as an individual research tool or an all class activity over 1 or more sessions.  With lots of video content and links to websites for further research and reading it can be utilised as an extension to classroom activities and an extension resource. 

Aim

By using this resource learners will have a better understanding of:

  • Local and national labour market information 
  • Courses and learning pathways in and around Worcestershire 
  • Specific and Allied Health Care roles 

 

Sections

1. Introduction:  

This give a definition and overview of what Health and Social Care is, tackles some of the myths surrounding the sector so care can be considered as a viable career choice and gives current and up to date intelligence around local and national labour marker information to support decision making. 

 2. The different roles in care: 

Exploring how Social Care and Health Care differ from one another, looks at the vast and varied roles that fall into this sector, including Allied Health professions linking to The National Careers Service. Promotes the idea and values of volunteering. Video’s Illustrate a day in the life of…..through the voice of a service user and live in carer along with video interviews of a care assistant and quality manager giving an overall holistic viewpoint. 

 3. Planning for a career in care: 

Looking at the skill set required for a career in care to include maths and English and those that will be developed and are transferable. How are technical skills being used now and how will they be used in the future? A good starting point for a career’s discussion and future proof planning! 

We hear from two key local employers talking through the skills and behaviours intrinsic to the role and how the roles may change moving forward. Encourages research around the different service users and how this may help you navigate a career path. 

 4. Learning Pathways: 

So..how do you get started? This section takes you through the learning pathways open to you, covering full time educational options at all entry points with live links to college courses. 

It covers apprenticeships and busts some myths giving current industry information to support this route. 

Looks at retraining with links to study programmes for adults and Higher Education. It is complemented by student video’s explaining their choices.  

University as an option for careers in health and social care, this element can be used to expand a learners thinking around care and higher education, looking at the many different services, the huge array of career choices that can be explored and how these roles can progress over time and a learners life span.
