    • It is important for professionals to understand their thoughts about people, how they treat individuals in their care and why these thoughts and actions exist. This helps those working in health and social care to develop a better self-awareness of their behaviour and the needs of others. A method that a professional uses to do this is called reflective practice and is essential in any field of work.

    • It is important to understand equality and diversity in communication and the terminology used within the health and social care profession, so that you use them appropriately. Using terms such as diversity, oppurtunities and rights should be used in the right context, as well as considering the environment that this terminology is used in. Not understanding this will make communication confusing and embarrassing for you as a professional, especially in diverse workforces.

  • Session 3 – Committing to the Care Value Base Through Communication

    • The care value base is a set of principles that helps health and social care professionals put the people in their care at the centre of provision and practice. Communications fits within the care value base because it lies in the centre of health and social care. Without good communication a professional is unable to ensure that people are receiving the best care.

  • Session 4 – Groups, Stereotyping and Labelling

    • Understanding how you think about things is a good skill, as this will allow you to identify the assumptions that you have made and remove these from your professional life. In order to do this it is important to recognise what stereotyrping is and how this forms into labels and prejudice, so that you can assess your thoughts and understand why you have them. We all have negative thoughts, this does not make us bad people, its what you do with them that matters.

    • It is important for professionals to deal with conflict in health and social care because tension can build and aggressive behaviour can develop if people feel that their problems or care aren't being dealt with properly. The effect of conflict can also create aggressive or passive (acceptance of poor treatment) behaviour, which is couterproductive for creating a healthy environment for care. Conflict can also arise between health and social care staff, for example when a number of different services are required for the care of an individual.
